Melanerpes formicivorus
Arnold 1
Hastings Reservation
24 March 1115. Put net up in storage tree. No catch.
29 March 1500. Numerous birds are up in the large Valley Oak on top of
the hill between the A1 '75 nest hole and LA2-UA2;
these birds were probably among them.
The count: 1240.
23 April 1350. Watching.
1405. ① ♀ unring eating flower buds; in main tree
with a ♂.
② ♂ Red/Metal
Red/White #199 in main tree with ①; apparently
has lost his wing-streamer.
1415. There are 2 unring ♂♂ in the vicinity, one of whom
landed briefly in the storage tree before flying across the road to
join the other bird in the edge of the forest by Big Tree.
1425. There are 4 birds here now, all sitting or working storage
holes: ①,②③ unringing, ④ ♀ unringing.
1440. Birds are sap-pucking here, among other things (this is
in the smaller tree next to the big storage tree to the
west).
1450. It seems not unreasonable that what has happened
is that ♀105 has merely been replaced by 2 other ♀♀.
Purge:
♀105. Last seen Feb.17. Gone by 21 March. Disappeared ≈ 8 March ±2 wks
