1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Arnold 1 Hastings Reservation 20 January Checked the marked acorns, finding 25/30, of which 1 had clearly been moved. I did not search the tree very thoroughly, however. 17 February 910-930. Watched from a short distance away through the fog, seeing all 3 birds (♂Wh, ♂Or, ♂Ub) in the storage tree. Later while counting, ♂Or,RW sat across the road toward BigTree and watched ( [illegible] ) A total of 2102 stores were all in the main tree. Of marked acorns, I found 21/25, of which 2 had been moved. 21 March Put out portion of '75 nest hole back in place. Saw several birds flying around here later on. Apparently something's up here—in walking by at 1620 there were 4 birds in the top of the 2° Valley Oak just above the storage tree, joined by a 5th from the storage tree itself. ♂Or or ♂Ub were not conspicuous among them. A revolution may have occurred here. Plenty of stores remain, in any case. 22 March 1000. Watching from hide above storage tree. 1005. 2 birds were briefly in the storage tree. 1010. ♂Wh,RW#199 came into storage tree. (♀Ub here also, plus others. 1015. ♂ still sitting here; ♂ gone. 1018. Several birds in area; some chasing; one chase by ♂ seen. 1025. ♂ is sitting around preening, etc., very much as if she belongs here. 1036. 2 unbanded ♀♀ landed essentially together in the
