1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Arnold 1 Hastings Reservation 13 January 1010. Watching. 1017. 3 birds landed in the storage tree simultaneously: ① AQRW#105, ② AQRW#199, and ③ unbande d #353. All left after 2 minutes 1024. All 3 returned again briefly, retreating the tve 2° storage tree after a brief time. 1035. The 2 banded birds back. The 3rd was in storage tree briefly, then left. A♀ is drilling. 1040. Birds left for next area. Frequent flights back and forth are taking place. 1050. 4 birds were suddenly present in the storage tree - the 3 plus another unbande d ♂, who was chased by the ♀ and the other unbande d ♂. 1053. At least 2 more unbande d birds appeared, both ♀♀. One chased the other around, but she, in turn, was chased by A♀105. None of these extra birds seemed to belong to the group. Some chasing and one grappling took place until 1100. 1115. Another intruder being chased. 1125. "" "" "" by the 3 birds again. 1135. Continued accession intrusion, especially by unbande d ♀♀. 1137. Drumming given by one of the resident birds. 1150. Some more chasing. I am completely unsure of where the intruders are coming from (even their direction of flight is little help). I'm now leaving.
