Melanerpes formicivorus
Black Oak
Hartings Reservation
(19 November) flew up from below and briefly struggled around in the net
until I dashed down and scared him off. The 2 birds
were taken down and held overnight.
20 November
820. Birds released. Both in good shape.
8 December
1300. Counted stores: Central area: 1465 }
Side trees: 594 } 2059; nearly
100% Q. kelloggii.
22 December
1020. Watching.
1028. An unbanded ♀ landed briefly in the forest perch tree with
an acorn, but then flew off towards A1: maybe an intruder?
1052. There are several birds around but all are playing
hard to get. I think I've finally seen ⚫♂️ub however up
in the forest perch area. ⚫♀️ub may also have been seen.
1100. ⚫♂️ub ok.
1130. ⚫♂️Or/#321 in main area.
1140. ⚫♀️ub eating acorn in side storage area.
1210. ⚫♀️Or-LB/M #320 over in side area. These birds continue
to be incredibly difficult.
1235. ⚫♂️LB/yellow #102 hawking in side area. That's it
except for ♀197, who was last seen making moves over at LA2
and may have left; but the birds have been hard enough to see
here today that she may very well still be hanging around
(after all, why would she move in November, of all months?)
