1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Black Oak Hastings Reservation (7 October) a very dark eye-I assume this to be a 1st-yr bird molting already to ♀. 941. The ♂ub up in the FPA eating an acorn and hawking has a darkish eye and could be the other 1st-yr. bird. 1048. Over in the side storage area is ♀WRW#197 with an acorn half. At least somebody's still banded here. The ♂ub Adult ♂ has a few peculiarities about his face: 1102. Near the ♀ is an ub ♂, while up in the FPA the Ad ♂ub is still hawking. Presumably this first bird is the 2nd juv. 1115. ♂4el/wn#102 storing in side area. 1130. Leaving. Something has to be done about the unbanded birds here! But despite them I did fairly well. As I got out of the hide a bird was in the net, who turned out to be one of Bianca's 1st-year birds molting to a ♀, ♂303. After doing her I counted stores: Inner Circle: 979 Side area: 380 } 1359 I noticed 18 of the old marked acorns still stored here as well. 10 October Purge: ♀98. Last seen 4 February (!) Gone by 22 April → Disappeared about 13 March ± 1 month. → (at upper Arnold 2!) ♂98. Last seen 23 April, gone by 18 July → Disappeared about 5 June ± 1 month. 14 October 830. See Journal for notes on several Gits, at least one from here (♀97) down next to the road toward the Spring. 930. Set up 2 mist nets. No catch by 1130.
