1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Hastings Reservation Change (28July) to presumed sap area. 1100. A ♂ub just landed in the storage tree with half an acorn. 1115. Leaving. Birds still just below storage tree where they remain pretty well concealed. In any case, at least 1 juv. has made it this far (hopefully banded!). 11 August Purg: ♂248 last seen 18 Dec '75, gone by 8 April '76, Disappeared abt. 13Feb ± 2 months 17 August 930. Watching. Several birds low across gulch on Buckeye 945. 2-3 birds in view still on side of Buckeye; apparently eating green acorns; I probably (banded at least). Nobody on this side as yet. 1015. 1-2 birds on this side of the gulch now. 1100. ♂? ♀? #252 over in nest area. 1130. Leaving. An occasional bird still pops by, but nobody is coming to the storage tree and they are in general remaining quite well hidden. 4 September 815. Watching. Calls across gulch; nobody here at the moment. 830. Some birds called from just above me, but none has come into view yet. 840. ♂ub eating green acorn near the storage tree alone. 850. ♂ub in above spot preening. 910. ♂ub hawking from sycamore. 2-3 others within calling distance. 912. ♂♂ weight #252 plus 3 others in sycamore area. 915. A brief skirmish transpired between an apparent intruder and several of the residents in the sycamore. 926. ♂♂♂♂♂♂ #234 here. 1000. Leaving. No juvs seen/heard. Birds are around, however.
