1976 Walter D. Koenig 3 Melanerpes formicivorus Black Oak Hastings Reservation 22 April 1005. Watching. 1010. A pack of 5 birds landed together in perch Valley Oak in forest towards Briance. 1♂ univer #102 seen; other here but couldn't be identified. 1017. 2♂ running seen eating flowers atop the tree; conceivably an intruder but must be assumed to be 351. 1027. 3♀WRW #197 sitting up there now. 1034. The 'pack' just landed up there, joining #197. In it was 4♂ un-Biz, #103. This pack is externally identical (though smaller - only 4-5 birds) than that at A3 observed several days ago. 1102. 3♂ LGLW #198 over in side storage area (with everyone else). 1112. 6♀ No Wson Riving → presumed #352. 1115. Leaving. Checked all holes - none. But surely #98 is somewhere (?). 23 April 1255. 3♂ LGLW #198 suddenly cruised over my head and landed briefly in the Upper Arnold 2 sap area. See UA2 notes. 1340. Nobody in territory. 1 May 1800. Checked holes. 24 birds were in the central area, flushing to the lower side. Several were still in the "pack" formation when they did so. 4 May 1745. Several birds in central area again but still keen vogeln in holes. 6 May 1715. One bird sitting in roost tree up in forest by A1 - but + no one else was around. 1750. 2nd pass - ♂ looking out of '45 roost hole! Eureka!
