Melanerpes formicivorus
Black Oak
Hastings Reservation
(4 February)
Burgess:
① j235 banded and last seen 12Aug75, gone by 5 October, Disappeared ~9 Sept. +1½M
② j 243 " " " " 19Aug75, gone by 5 Oct.75, Disappeared ~12 Sept. +1-2 wks.
Note: I did observe an unbanded ♀ on 3 November 1975 but
she
assumed not was not a group member; thus it is not too
unexpected to find an unbanded ♀ here. Whether or not she's
the same bird as was here last year, is of course another question
entirely, I'm afraid.
23 February
1015 Counted stores:
Central area: 768
Side area: 364
{1132}
I saw/heard no M.f. here.
21 March 1515. Heard plenty of activity here while at Bianca; an
intruder there could also have been from here. I
walked by to check stores, and there are still plenty
here.
22 March Due to a conflict, #392 and 393, the late juveniles from last
summer before they were banded, have had their numbers
changed to 396 and 397, respectively.
9 April
1130. Count: central area: 908
side area 408
{1316}
At least one bird was sitting in the perch forest.
Clearly stores have at least not diminished significantly since
February.
19 April 1755. One bird flushed from storage area in passing through,
none else seen in/out of holes.
20 April 1605. 6 birds flushed out of central area (out of a possible 7).
