1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Arf, too Hastings Reservation 28 June Noting several birds in the tall perch tree as I drove by, I stopped to watch briefly. Seen were 2♀♀, 1 adult, unbanded, the other probably a 2nd-year bird as it gave good squeak begging displays when the other ♀ landed above her. Also 1♂, unbanded, and a 4th bird were around. I may have heard some juvenile begging, but I could not be certain. 1 July 1145. Flushed a juvenile as I drove by. Since there are lots of stores left, it's not surprising that these birds did, apparently, pull off a nest. 8 August 1215. Several birds in the central area here. Apparently they have exhausted their stores; I saw no definite remaining acorns in the storage tree. Let me revise that: only various bits and pieces remain (a juv. came and drilled at stores here for awhile). Seen were at least 2♂♂, 1♀, and 2 juvs; nobody seen well (which included a 1♂♂, 1 juv, and the ♀) were banded. They did seem to be hanging around this area fairly consistently.
