Melanerpes fomcicivorus
School Hill West
Hastings Reservation
21 April 1030. Walked over here for the first time this year, flushing
2 birds, one of whom was an unbanded ♂. There are still stores,
remaining in their storage tree also.
29 April 1055. A bird, probably from here, was seen slightly down
on the side of School Hill by 1800. Meanwhile, almost
constant far-off Garricles can be heard emanating
from this vicinity on top of School Hill. I have no idea
what's going on up there, unfortunately.
25 May 1615. Walked by again, noting a fair number of stores
remaining but wretchedly no birds at all. I checked the larger
trees around for holes, but found nothing in the ones I
found (all in the large Qkelloggii next to the storage tree).
On the other hand, everybody seems pretty calm this time of the
day.
5 June 9445. Wandered by here, flushing one bird from the BlackOak
but not, I think, from a hole. If it was from a nest, they
are still incubating, as I climbed up and did not hear babies
anywhere.
A few stores remain, but that's all.
13 June 1545. Flushed 2 birds who had, I believe, been sap-sucking in
a BlueOak up from the storage tree. Saw nobody in the storage
area itself, and there was little sign of action in the holes.
27 October There are a fair number (500+) of stores here; I didn't
see any birds, but the group seems to be alive, at least.
