1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus New School Hill Hastings Reservation (21 April) 947. In the upper enclosure tree, calling had my attention to the hole inside the canopy, where @FORW#192 was investigating. She sat outside the hole for several minutes before finally moving up the tree. 1025. These 3-4 birds seem to be it down here. Moving to 'B'. 23 April 900. Walked up to check the holes. None was in any of them A or intruder was displaced while I was here (10 min.) 27 April Nobody seen in holes. 3 May 930. Several birds in lower hill area - perhaps nest is down there somewhere? Nobody in traditional holes. 8256 and one [illegible] seen. 950. Birds flew to upper hill area. There are only about 5 birds here, but what seems to be missing are wingstreamered first-year birds. 6 May 1430. Several birds in the vicinity; 4 congregated in the trough of the saddle in a large Valley. Pale there and seemed to be tied that this area (nest there somewhere?) Seen were 288 and 298; the 99 were unbanded (#343 and 344), one of the 88 was [illegible] Maw/Mane #86. Later, when I walked up to School Hill B area, a bird [illegible] cutted 2 times from off down the slope a ways; I have no idea who this might have been; it is not particularly likely that it was a School Hill bird. 8 May 935. Here. A couple birds in upper territory; nobody down in lower part at the moment. In hide. 945. 08 wh /or? #256 in lower area with 1-2 others. @4u6 here also. Birds hawking.
