1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus New School Hill Hastings Reservation (17 March) While counting, ♂ mauve/m (#86) came into the storage area to chase out a Titmouse. It appeared as though he has heavy tail- spotting (?). The count: Tree 1: 318 Tree 2: 852 TOTAL: 1170 SH'B': 0 9:30. Possibly in response to a calling Hairy Woodpecker (or in pursuit thereof) an Acon W. flew toward and up to the '95 rest hole (the Hairy had flown by here going downhill), staying at the entrance for a few seconds before seeing me and moving around the trunk. 17 April 930. ♂194 and ♀195 involved at Y. See Y notes, ♀192 seen also. Later I checked all the holes I know of up here, seeing nobody in any of them. One or two birds were in the vicinity, but nobody was being particularly conspicuous. 18 April ♂194 and ♂195 still at Y most of the day. See Y notes. 905. Watching main area. 2 birds flushed or called up in SH'B' area when I went up to get the hide 912. ♂ mauve/m #86 in central storage area chasing dicky birds. Several other birds still in upper 'B' part of territory. 915. ♀9ub here also; flew with another bird up hill toward 'B' area. 925. ♂ wh - /LPinke?#256 here also. 928. W. Meadowlark got displaced from top of tree by ♂ (seen better). A 4th bird (♂) here also. 933. ♂86 has 2 distinct tail spots on each outer rectrix!
