Melanerpes formicivorus
New School Hill Hastings Reservation
11 January 1600. Came up to set the trap over the nest/roost hole.
While waiting for dusk, 8 birds flew down to the main
storage area, one by one, at one point. Some pre-roost
mounting was seen at 1705 up above the deer enclosure.
Roosting apparently occurred somewhere up here as well.
(at about 1715). At least 3 did roost in the nest tree,
however.
12 January 1400. Removed a sample of ~75 acorns; also marked 75 all
in the climbable 2nd tree:
① 10 Yellow just above fence (low)
② 10 Blue main trunk, past 2 limbs
(tough)
③ 10 Red on trunk low
④ 15 White above③:
⑤ 15 Green on E facing limb, Red House
⑥ 15 Red above⑤
