Melanerpes formicivorus
Road 3
Hastings Reservation
27 September
1800. Counted stores: Valley Oak: 149 )
Next tree: 168 } 317 total.
9 October
850. Watching.
910 Birds here: (1) ♀ 265, (2) ♀ 76-ω(?) / ω #269, also a banded ♂
intruder, who hid atop the VO storage tree for several minutes
while these other 2 birds worked stores in the sycamore, then flew
over to them, where he was instantaneously chased away out
of the storage area altogether.
920. Several returned with acorns; inc. ♂ Da #68.
926. Bird in sycamore is ♀(?) or / 1st - clearly #272, who apparently
has molted to ♀ (unless I'm confused!)
930. Good find: ♂ La-Bm/M #271 landed in the sycamore with an
acorn.
942. ♂ ωχ-Bk/Bk-ωχ #184.
1015. I haven't seen #272 again, so her sex will have to remain
somewhat indefinite (though I will assume she is a ♀ for now).
Just changed my mind - having seen what I'm fairly sure was
a young bird, or, i.e. #272 not 68, and who was a ♂ type
even though the red front was hard to see.
27 October
1445. Watching.
1455. ♂ here eating acorn; 2nd bird flew in; neither was identified.
1510. ♀265 and ♂184 here now. 1515. Stopped to check stores.
Counted stores: Valley Oak: 426 )

Between the nest tree and the creek was a small aggregation
of ATW feathers, mostly down, covert, and several secondaries. My
guess is that the body they belonged to will not be seen flying again.
