1976 Walter D. Koenig
Melanerpes formicivorus
Road 3
Hastings Reservation.
16 May
1230. Measured the babies. Put up the nest trap and almost
caught the F at 1400.
19 May
1545. Measured the babies. Trying to catch F again.
1630. Got her! She was banded and processed as #265.
Also counted stores: Valley Oak 193 663
Sycamore 490
22 May
1730. Measured the babies, all of whom seem to be in fine
shape.
30 May
1130. Measured, banded, and bled the babies, who are
#268 to 272.
1 June
1900. Watched the nest a few minutes.
1907. (1) 8"DP #68 in sight with food in his bill.
1911. (1) 8"184 came to feed.
1914. F sitting on limb with food in her bill.
1922. She's not fed yet, but I finally saw enough bands to call her #265.
1925. Leaving. Group of babies clearly still intact.
5 June
1220. Watching the hole.
1230. F got acorn bits from limb in nest tree, but didn't feed.
1235. Fledged already maybe?
No sign of the kids (nobody looking out of the hole). They 'must'
have fledged already and be off in some far part of their territory.
6 June
1730. Baby looked out of hole at me when I walked underneath.
clearly they haven't fledged yet, which is not too surprising
as this is presumably their 30th day.
12 June
1945-2000. Watched, seeing the F DB/WS #265 sitting in the nest tree
for much of the time (where there are plenty of stores) and 8 PRW
#184 briefly. Began to worry about the kids, but then one stuck.
