1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Road 3 Hastings Reservation 11 January 1200. 3 birds are apparently still in the vicinity; ♂PRW #184 and ♀ub#337 were seen. 50 acorns were taken as a sample from the Valley Oak storage tree. None were marked due to difficulty of access. 10 February 1325. Watching 1342. (1) Unbanded #337 working stores in nest/storage tree. 1402. (2) DBLue or/DBlue #68 landed in Valley Oak storage tree, flew to Sycamore where the ♀ still sits. 1420. Leaving. Other ♂ hasn't shown up. Count: Valley Oak: 459 ? 1184 (As usual, probably low) Sycamore: 725 11 February 1245. I drove by and saw 3 birds in the sycamore perch tree across the road from the loka storage tree. I couldn't identify any of them well, but one ♂ seemed to be ♂wn / black and was no doubt #184. 29 March 1115. All 3 birds seen well in storage area. They were mostly flycatching. Count: Valley Oak: 444 ? 116! 717 One way or the other, stores are clearly not greatly diminished here as yet. 18 April 1900. None seen in/out of holes in a quick pass of area. 1900. 3 birds flushed from nest/roost tree at dusk. 20 April 1000. All 3 birds seen and identified in storage area (184,337,68). I watched them hawk for a few minutes and none else seemed to be present. Stores definitely do remain.
