1976 Walter D. Koenig 8 Melanerpes formicivorus Finch Hastings Reservation (20 May) Feather tracts had not coalesced into a solid mass yet (thus they are about 4 days old, I suspect). There were 5 of them, thus I strongly suspect that there were 5 eggs, laid by the one adult ♀ here and that they all hatched. All the babies looked fine. I gave each one a single solid color band: Orange, Yellow, L.Blue, D.Green, and Red. 5 June Birds seen feeding about 1230. 6 June 945. Nest opened; babies, all 5 of whom are fine, were banded and bled. They are #278 to 282. 14 June 1700. One baby was sitting atop the nest tree looking too scared to go anywhere; fledging has obviously taken place. 17 June 1815. Florence saw ♀ [BLW]#232 and ♂[GLW]#281 plus another bird. 19 June 1715. Several babies in holes in the nest tree; j281 DB-IP- seen on the side of the tree. 23 June 2015. ♂ub flycatching from V0 perch tree overlooking the creek 28 June 1130. Several birds around. Counted stores: Sycamore: 37 TOTAL 814 Valley Oak: 777 30 June 1515. ♂ in sycamore nest tree. 1525. ♂233 and ♂266 in Valley Oak storage tree; latter feeding a fledgling acorn bits. 1532. ♂63 in sycamore nest tree. (4) 281 eating acorn in storage tree. (5) 282 here also. (6) 232 and a juv. both eating acorns in nest tree. 1537. ♀237 in nest tree briefly. 1545.
