1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Road 1 Hastings Reservation (25 September) 1703. ♀180 storing an acorn. Various ♂♂ (69, 180, ub) seem to be of the storing. 1705. leaving. Two comments: the "♀" - seen earlier, feared to be j292, is much more likely to have been ♀ - LP#180; finally, I certainly do not know what happened to ♀181 and ♂182, but either they are playing very scarce or are gone- very possibly involved in a move somewhere or other, I should think. 27 September Counted stores: Valley Oak 570 Sycamore (nest): 25 } 595 [many prob. from last year | A few from last year remaining in both trees] ♂PRW#183 seen; several birds in the granary working stores. 29 October Counted stores: Valley Oak: 1568 } Nest sycamore: 562 } 2130 A couple birds were around but • their main center of activity was not apparent. 3 November 1625. ♂rawe/m#183 in nest tree. 2 others in Sycamore perch tree: ♀DBEW#222 and ♀M/or-#293. 8 November 1640. ♀R-w-r/m#180. 17 November 1100. Watching. 1140. Finally someone: (1) ♂red/DB-wr(m)#295. 1220. Ridiculous. Leaving and returning later on. 1420. Back. Net up; captive set in cage up in tree near nut. 1422. Several karrit-cuts by the captive. 1423. (2) ♂B&/DB-yel#294 here and interested. (3) ♂180 here 30 seconds later. both looking. 1424. No vocalizations. ♂294 left. 1425. Both birds gone. 1429. ♂294 back. 1431. Buzzed the cage. 1435. 2 more passes at the cage. (4) ♂PRW#183 here now.
