1976 Walter D. Koenig 7 Melanerpes formicivorus Road 1 Hastings Reservation (20 April) As far as I could tell these 2 were the only constant intruders, though a 3rd could have been present. Meanwhile similar-sounding noises are coming from up the road further. 952. ⑦ ⑨ m/⑫ ⑩ ⑫ in storage tree. 1000. I better see what's up the road. Chasing and frantic activity continues. Purge: ⑧ 223. Last seen 2 Nov.'75; Gone by 10 Feb.'76→Disappeared about 22 Dec.±1 month 23 April 1100. No eggs, but still lots of activity, including some good fighting with intruders - similar but perhaps even more intense than on 20 April. ⑧ 180 and ⑦ 182 seen. I will come back to watch later. 27 April 1715. Activity noticeably subdued. ⑧ 249 seen. Nobody in holes. 29 April 1450. ⑧ 183 and ⑧ 222 (both 1st year) over at Gate and beyond. See Gate notes. 1600. ⑦ 182 seen at R1. 30 April ⑧ 249; ⑨ 180 seen while watching at Finch. Also ⑧ 181. 1 May 1930. Checked the territory, flushing one bird only near the nest tree. Returned to watch the nest tree at dusk. Most of the birds roosted in the low hole facing the road (including ⑧ 180, 181, ⑧ 182); 2 birds, however, roosted in the late nest hole of last year. Apparently nobody roosted on the other side of the tree, however. 2 May 845. Saw ⑧ 249; he and most others were up above the storage tree eating Black Oak catkins and flowers. None in lower known holes.
