1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Warp 5 Hastings Reservation (16 June) culvert, this one almost just up from R1, where there are a few more storage areas, some stored acorns, at least one beautiful hole, and one bird in the vicinity. This is another group, and I will come up to check it out again later, as it is not as hard to get to as Warp 5 and is situated in a small nearly level open area which will make observation fairly easy. The group name is undetermined as yet, but when decided on will follow the notes for this group. 5 July 9 October 1045. An unbanded adult 8 was seen storing an acorn in the storage tree down just above the road between R1 and gate; presumably this is a Warp 5 bird. 3 November 1440. Watching from hide. 1507. A bird landed in the granary - but was gone almost immediately. Possibly a second bird here also. 1525. ? down below; a 2nd bird is calling off to the side. 1540. Some more calling off to the side 1610. No return yet, but clearly a group (probably a pair) does indeed reside here. Already the sun has sunk below the level needed to illuminate [illegible] of any but the top of PO Hill; perhaps earlier would be better. A bird did just return, but I scared him off when I looked to see where he was. 4 November 1140. Back for another watch. 1205. ?ub appeared briefly. 1210. The ? sat here for 5 minutes: I didn't see her well, but I think she is unbanded also.
