Melanerpes formicivorus
Gate
Hastings Reservation
29 April 1450. Walked through the territory, finding birds only out
along the road. Two of these I noticed had wing-
streamers who were sitting peacefully in the Westgate
tree, then flew to one of the sycamores by Hallisey's, then
went about 1/8 miles further down the valley to a large
sycamore @ Warner's. A third bird flew in that
direction as well, but not with them. The two turned
out to be 3PRW(183) and 3DSRW(222), both first year
birds from Road 1.

30 April 1015. 8242 and 8238 in Westgate tree; several others there
and in Gate tree.
2 May 830. 6 birds seen flying into Gate storage tree, probably from Gate
'75 nest tree. Several then flew up across the road a ways. All
two known holes were checked, but none was in any of them.
3 May 1615. 25 birds around the field across the creeks, including
3RRLW#238. None in known holes.
4 May 1900. Again numerous birds in the field across the creeks,
including a & (and, as it turned out, a 2nd bird as well)
in the Gate '75 nest hole in the Live Oak. So I went
ahead and opened it, but there was nothing inside.
Perhaps I should consider going ahead and ambushing here.
