Melanerpes formicivorus
Gate
Hastings Reservation
(9 April)
There is definitely some chasing going on, but it is not
clear who @ are the victims.
940. Breaking. Things are quiet. A couple Grits just headed
up the road.
At dusk, birds were roosting in the Westgate nest
hole (4 birds scared out in an unsuccessful attempt to
catch them the next morning) and the Gate nest tree
(the Live Oak), where I will be careful not to disturb
them.
12 April
More fiddling around to catch Grits at the Westgate
sycamore, all unsuccessful. Bird (i) is (are) still roosting
in the nest hole in the live Oak.
18 April
1900. Birds roosting in '75 nest holes of Westgate
and Gate (the Live Oak).
20 April
I went ahead and stuck up the net in front of the roost
hole, but caught only 1 bird (the others spoke in such
a situation) who malheureusement turned out to be
858, who I undid and released. Also seen was 8RRC#238.
22 April
Most or all Grits roosted in the Live Oak.
28 April
920. Fair amount of activity - lots of Garrigue displays, some chasing
of apparent intruders. One bird seen [illegible] sallying from
bark low in trunk of a Live Oak within the canopy,
apparently looking for insects. He fluttered 3-4 ft. but from
the trunk, still within the canopy, and returned to the
trunk a second or so later. He did this 4-5 times before
sitting and eventually flying up to greet a 2nd bird in
the vicinity. None was identified.
