1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Chonge Hastings Reservation (12 May) Add: ♂402. Moved to Chonge 0 March 1976, age unknown. ♀403. " " " " Both these birds were not present 12 December 1975, but were present 12 May. Most likely their move was more recent than March. 19 May 1215. Nobody at all in any of the holes here that I know of. 1230. Watching from hide. No birds (AW) around at all. 1245. Still zilch here, but some calling heard across canyon. 1251. Proof! 5 birds (4♂, 1♀, inc. Rub) showed up together in the sycamore roost tree. 1300. ♂234 there also (♂? / wh-) 1303. 2 brief mountings took place among birds sitting very near each other in the sycamore: one ♂ on ♂, other ♂ on ♀[ub] 1315. 2 birds out of the 4 just flew down into the sycamore. I'm going to go check - 21 May 900-1000. Started by checking the holes on Red Hill side, then went over to Buckeye to check out the birds' favorite areas there. The area over on Buckeye Hill is very interesting - mostly young Quercus douglasii, 2-6" in diameter, spaced 10-20 ft. apart. Occasional large Blue Oaks occur in groups of 2-4 in several spots, and it is here that the AW sit and one finds Magpies foraging. Several AW were over here, but I found no likely holes, nor any storage areas. By the time I sat down several birds were back around the sycamore on the Red Hill side, however, where I think they will nest eventually.
