1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Lower Haystack Hastings Reservation 10 October Purge: 8174. Last seen 25 June, gone by 19 July. Disappeared about 7 July ± 1 week. (The alternative is that this bird has escaped detection recently by virtue of having perhaps lost its wing-streamer (see 20 August notes, p15)). 18 October 1030. Watching. Nobody in central area when I arrived. 1035. 1♂OrRW#307 in forest just below storage tree along with 2♂DBRW#309. 1040. A few others showing up. 1♂LBRW#171, 1♀R-w-B/M#170. 1♂RRR#236. 1♂WLLW#173. 1♀CWLRW#308. All in Upper Hay tree hawking/eating acorns 1110. 1♀ub storing acorn in UH tree. 1130. Leaving. Storing continues, but not at any record-breaking pace. 29 October 1615. Counted stores: 2° tree: 503 } Main tree: 4399 } 4902 7 November 1600. Watching up here, where an unringed ♀ and at 1625 ♀ Yel/Blk#176 from Hay-Blom were being chased around by 8236, 8170, 8171, 8173. The ub♀ was here persistently for 15 min or so; the 8176 was just seen at 1625. 15 November 1130. 8RRR#236 plus others in Live Oak up on top of Haystack (Howard(80)) 1132. 8LBRW#191 flew down to Main granary from up there; swooped out in a hawking flight. 8WLLW#173 in UH tree. 1135. ♀Yel/Blk#176 of Hay-Blom up there - not being chased (but possibly why so many other birds are up there). 1136. Correction - is 8Or/Blk#173, not 8176. 1145. Double correction - not #173 either, but rather 8 Blue/Yellow#309, one of the
