1976 Walter D. Koening Melanerpes formicivorus 3 Lower Haystack Hastings Reservation (17 April) ①♂RRR #236 ②♀CHRW#170 ③♂BRW#171 ④♂WLW#173 ⑤♂LGLW#174 All were sitting, preening, and flying around to a small extent on this windy hilltop. ⑥ 6th bird present up there, probably one of the unwing- streamed ♀. ⑦ 7th bird seen. All together in same tree on knoll. No flights elsewhere seen. 1425. All chased an intruder over to the NE part of knoll. I'm going to check any holes I can find over there. By the time I got to the knoll the birds were over in the general nest area. I found no likely holes on the knoll, however, and none had gone into any of the holes in the traditional area by the time I'd walked back over there. 28 April 1635. Arrived. They've pulled their old trick: they're all spurlos verswunden. Watching. 1705. Still O. Going to check holes and walk around the place. 1930. Finally found somebody: ♂or/Black#173, well over on Blomquist's by the old road down toward the Valley. 3 May 1400-1430. Absolutely nothing. I did not go over to/past the knoll, however. 4 May 1330. Watching up from hill. As has become usual, I don't see/hear a trace of the birds anywhere.
