Melanerpes formicivorus
Lower Haystack Hastings Reservation
28 January 1410. A few birds flushed to unseeable locales when I arrived (mostly near the nest tree); I did see ⑧RRR sap-sucking in the border tree on the saddle, but otherwise everything was quiet.
Seen during the storage checking: ⑦jL6W#1974, ③jCHRW#1970, ②j#1971, ④j#1973, ⑥j#1972. At 1520 all 5 of these 1st yr birds came to the Upper Haystack tree to work stores.
The count: Main tree: 4250
2° tree: 251 TOTAL 4501
Ull Tree: 0
Marked acorns: I found 72/100, of which 2(!) had clearly been moved.
10 February ⑧#60 seen for sure at Gate! See notes — A new interpretation of his history is also under Gate, for 16 February.
18 February 1500. Stopped by briefly; one bird flushed from the main storage tree (⑧RRR I think) but none was anywhere that lent itself to observation.
9 March 1415. In hide.
1430. A few birds are around, but they are down the gulch and out of view.
1450. ①⑧RRR eating acorn in 2° tree. ②⑨CHRW there also working stores (both just arrived).
1455. ③⑨PLW eating acorn in main storage tree.
1507. ④#1973 and ⑤#1974 both in storage tree working stores with several others including ①⑧RRR. It is quite chilly and windy up here and the birds do seem to be eating acorns mostly.
1515. I found ⑥⑨NOWINA STREAMER eating an acorn in the main storage
