Melanerpes formicivorus
Haystack-Blouquist Hastings Reservation
(6 May) 1100. ?AD and at least one other bird still in [illegible] (lower edge of
area, possibly in forest edge down by old county road. I can't
find than to see, however.
9 May 1800. Flushed a ? from the '75 nest hole, where there turned
out to be 2 eggs.
✓ 10 May 915. Counted stores: 378. Also checked nest, where only
2 eggs are still present. I hope nothing's wrong...
13 May 900. Opened nest: 4 eggs. Apparently it can be 48 hours
between eggs sometimes.
15 May 915. Bird in hole.
19 May 800. Bird in hole. Also ~3 others seen, including ?Dr RW
(#246), in scattered parts of the territory.
24 May 815. Bird in hole; 3 other AW in area.
26 May 1030. Hole opened; 3 babies in hole, not trace of 4th; but 1 was
quite small and I suspect that he and the 4th were from the
2 late eggs, thereby increasing the size/age differential and decreasing
their chances of survival. The elders, at least, are about 5 days old.
31 May 950. Bird in hole, 1-2 others seen in vicinity.
1115. ?yellow/. #176 seen on way back.
