1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes famciivorus Hastings Reservation 1800 (14 July) leaf gleaning. 905. Both Birds back in Main tree hawking mostly. ♂ identified. 930. Nothing new. The adult ♀ is gone, at least for now. Counted stores: Nest tree: 152 ? Main tree: 194 } 346 5 August 1745. ♂(B/W) #43 in Main tree. 1752. Flew to trees by • the creek; another bird probably there. 1815. Nobody's returned as yet. All pretty quiet except for occasional calls down toward the gate. 1825. ♀#166 eating acorn in nest tree. 1830. Leaving. 1 September 900. Counted stores: 56, all in the main tree. Also in the main tree were ♂43 and ♀166. 28 September Counted stores: Nest tree: 8 } Main tree: 91 } 99 2 Birds seemed to be in the area. 18 October 915. Watching. 920. ♂LB/W#43 chasing some jays around in the main tree. 930. ♀LB-W/ B#166 in nest tree. 1000. Leaving. Birds are storing acorns, though rather slowly. Purge: ♂42. Last seen 18 May, gone by. This bird was last seen more or less "for sure" on 29 April, and should have been seen posteriori to that time; perhaps her disappearance had something to do with the loss of the nest? (It of course could have been vice-versa). She was presumably around at least through 4 June, and apparently gone by at least by 13 July: Disappeared about 23 June ± 2 wks.
