Melanerpes formicivorus
New 1800
Hastings Reservation
(29 April)
1030. ? , unwrung (?) chased from storage tree, headed out across creek.
1032. 8LB/10 just chased a bird toward 1500 [844?] from about
me near the border.
1035. 8L66 hawking in nest tree. Another bird just got chased
down to the creek.
1040. 2 adults now in nest tree, juvenile down by the creek (?)
1042. A bird from 1500 just flew down along the creek.
1043. A bird got chased from here in trees 4-4a to 1500,
apparently by an 1800 bird. Clearly the boundaries,
physical and psychological, are not yet quite fixed between
these 2 groups.
1055. There are still strange birds in the vicinity: one seen in
the old tree again, another well up on School Hill
wandering briefly down the slope toward 1800 territory.
3 May
1450. One bird flushed from storage/nest tree but nobody in any
holes and everything else quiet.
9 May
1930. Nobody in holes in the 2° storage tree; one AW silhouette
seen over in the main tree, however.
10 May
1735. Watching. At least 1 bird in main tree. ?9 W/B1k #166
greening there.
1740. ? flew over my head to trees [illegible] above crossing
area [ ] Pretty quiet.
1947. 2 birds in 'nest' tree. There does appear to be interest in
one or the other of the holes there.
1955. Bird in '75 nest hole. No doubt that's it, but my guess
is that it's still quite early (i.e. eggs just about to begin being [illegible]).
