1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus New (800) (16 March) Hastings Reservation Live oaks on the Haystack knoll above the main storage tree, and returned several minutes later. 1245. All 4 birds have flown up to the Live Oak slightly up & on the knoll along the same line as is made by the 2 storage trees. They are apparently sapsucking up there. Count: Nest tree: 550 Total: 829 Main tree: 279 I went up to the Live Oak area and was unable to find the sap area, though I suspect that is what they are doing up here. I did find a possible roost hole in one of the Live Oaks, however. Purge: jur. #167, last seen 30 Oct. 1975, gone by ~11 December, Disappeared about 20 November ± 2 weeks. 22 April 1640. Watching. In the Main tree are apparently 3 birds, mostly doing no more than sitting around alert. Identified were ☺♂LB/W#43 and ☺♀LB-W/8ik#166; The 3rd bird was a ♀ as expected. 1913. ♂166 eating acorn. The tree is entirely shaded, but no one's made the move to the other (lighted) storage tree. 1945. I'm off. Surely the 3rd bird was #42. (Jespere) 29 April 1010. Watching. ☺♂LB/W#43 in Main tree. 1015. ☺♀#42 in nest tree; a strange, but banded ♀ over in old tree toward Gate; #44 flew to nest tree, landing wake, but was immediately chased violently by a 3rd bird, identity unknown. Meanwhile, 1-2 others in main tree. Wow.
