1976 Walter D.Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus New 1800 (16 March) 1148. ♀ LB-W/Bilk preeing in main storage tree; ♂ there also. (2)♂LB/Wh seen (43) 1153.(3)♀ wh/T returned to main tree (#42). 1200. A call brought my attention to a bird flying from the direction of the main storage tree past the nest tree and up to the knoll separating 1500/1800 just above where I was sitting (at tree 4a). It turned out, of course, to be the former 2nd year ♂ here and now the ♂ at 1500, ♂Da/Bpink#44, who acted every bit as furtive as a regular intruder immediately upon his return, and indeed was probably chased away from here in an attempt, perhaps, to filch some stores from his old groupmates. 1209. ♀LB/Wh hawking in main storage tree. 1222. One of the birds (the A♂ I think), who was working stores in the low main limb in the storage tree, suddenly headed for the ground and stood there, stretching his head up above the rather sparse grass cover, for 10 seconds before dipping down twice and coming up with an acorn (or at least an acorn shell), which he proceeded to ♂ store in the storage area. 1230. The A♂ flew over to the opposite side of the tree from where she'd been in the main storage tree and greeted ♂Da/OP#44 there! He proceeded to sit with her for several minutes and then flycatch from the top of the tree for at least 5 minutes during which time all 3 other 1800 birds were working stores lower in the tree. About 1238 he flew over to the
