1976 Walter D. Ksenig Melanerpes formicivorus New 1800 Hastings Reservation 12 January 115. At least 3 birds were over here in the old tree on the extension of Haystack where I'd see them last winter. Earlier several birds had been in the main tree here. Seen were ① 843 and ② 8166. 1132. ③ 842 in nest tree; others have returned to storage areas also. 1140. Leaving Later (a) 844 was seen at 1500 where I suspect he has now moved permanently. See notes for observations of 1800 birds at 1500 for late in the afternoon as well [time 1545]. 19 January 1200. Flushed ① 83/w when I came to check marked acorns, of which I could find 30, 3 of which had clearly been moved. Purges: ⑧ 49, Moved about 16 December 1975 (to 1500). 2 February 1430. Counted stores: Main Tree 327 Total 799 Next tree 472 One-2 birds were in the territory. 11 February 1550, ⑧ 83/w and ⑨ 8n?m working stores, eating acorns in the main storage tree. 1605. No others seen. One flycatch flight seen. ⑩ 845 Purse was also. Purges: ? juv #168, last seen 24 Sept. 1975, gone by 30 Oct., Disappeared about 12 Oct. ±2 wks, 10 March 1600. Saw at least 2 birds here; there are stores remaining in both storage trees. 16 March 1145. Watching from 1500 side.
