1976 Walter-D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus New 1500 Hastings Reservation (11 February) Just before departing the ♂ returned to the lower sap side and showed enough Orange on his left leg bands to convince me that he was ♂44. 18 February 1515. ♂DG/DP#44 was in the top of tree 1. He sallied out for insects once during the 5 minutes that I watched him. 9 March 1630. Came by to pick up the remaining acorn bags, and not seeing any birds atop tree 1 as usual, I checked the stores, finding none! I should thus check carefully to see ① if the group (26 birds) is still here at all and ② if not, if the ♂ has returned to 1800. I walked by again a little later on and apparently flushed 26 birds from tree 3 up - so perhaps the birds are still here. 10 March 1400. A bird was sitting in the favorite spot in tree 1, so the group still exists. Later, about 1545, I came by and saw a bird up in the lower sap side sit for a short time and then depart for the side of School Hill. I didn't see anyone else in the territory. 16 March 1120. One bird (♂ I think) atop tree 1; flushed to sap side. Official acorn count: Ω. See 1800 notes for observation on the ♂ here at 1200. While I was watching at 1800, the 2nd yr ♂ among them, I checked at 1500 several times but saw no trace of the ♀. 1330. Found her: Unbanded flycatching in perch tree just across the road (tree 5). 24 March 1030. 1 bird atop tree 3 when I drove by. 29 March 925. ♂44 sitting in tree 2.
