1976 Walter F.D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus New 1500 (12 January) Whom was j♀#166 from 1800, the other not seen but flushed back to 1800. The ♀, who was somewhat above the 2 other arrivers but below the ♂, threatened the juv.♀, but did not follow up; rather, she flew off after a minute, leaving the other 3 birds. Both lower birds eventually flew back to 1800, the ♂ eventually was left alone, then gave an alarm and tucked down below the canopy. 18 January 2 birds (♂,♀) were here at dusk, the ♀ roosting over by the road in the hole where 1500's nest was began last spring. 19 January Checked marked acorns. I could only find 45, of which 3 had clearly been moved. 1230. I returned to watch, and only had to wait a few minutes before the 2 birds returned: ①♀ub and ②♂r/0-#44, who has clearly moved permanently. Purges: ♂34, last seen 3 Novem 75, gone by 10 December → Disappeared about 23 Nov.75, ±2 weeks. ♂31, last seen 11 Decem 1975, gone by 16 December → Disappeared about 13 Dec. 75. Add: ♂44, moved to New 1500 about 16 December 75 (from 1800) 2 February Set up net at 1300. Also counted stores: Tree 1: 270 Tree 2: 94 Total 364. Obviously stores are going fast. Meanwhile I did see one bird flycatching in tree 3. 11 February 1605. ♀ub#371 sitting in Tree 1 alone. 1625 Leaving There was also a ♂ in tree 2, but the little fart did an admirable job of remaining incognito.
