1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus New 1500 Hastings Reservation 11 January 1130. Several (3-4) birds were in this territory; seen were a ♀ (probably unbanded) and a banded ♂ (M? / Red? , most likely not one of the former inhabitants). A ♂ was furthermore chased off of tree 2 by the banded ♂; the intruder flew up the creek a ways and sat unidentified in a large Valley Oak for quite some time. 1-2 other birds flushed early from tree 1 to the sap side and were not identified either. I continued on about 1145. 12 January 1015. Arrived. ♀ sitting in tree 1. Apparently she is unbanded; no other birds are in evidence. 1045. Banded ♂ returned from sap side; both in tree 1 for several minutes; ♂ flew down to Live Oak by creek (towards 1800). 1115. No birds in evidence. Leaving. 1145. Watching 1210. ♂ Da/DP #44 (formerly) of 1800, flew into top of tree 1; he is surely the above "banded ♂," and apparently has taken over here after the disappearances of the other 2 ♂'s in recent weeks. These may be the only 2 birds here now, the entire original group having disappeared one way or another. 1215. Tracking. A banded ♂ [Red/Dark?] landed in 1; was chased. Obviously I probably do not have everything here quite straight yet. 1225. Leaving. 1545. ♂ sitting in Lower Sap Side. Never identified for sure, but banded and probably #44. A couple minutes later 3 other birds appeared making 4: a ♀, and 2 others, one of
