1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Pump Hastings Reservation 19 April See Y notes for more on 259+261. 1045. Drove by: sure enough there was a bird here (despite the lack of acorns!), an unbanded ♂. He was still sitting alone in the storage area when I left 10 minutes later. 23 April 920. There are 2 AW in the storage tree here, one searching around for stores. This is the first time since 19 April that I've seen someone here. 4 May I've seen nobody here since the 23rd of April, despite frequent passes. It is perhaps time to bait the place again, especially given my "successes" with birds from Y & getting themselves caught here previously. 6 May 1000. 125 acorns in tree and the net up. 1130. Scrub Jay caught in net; released No woodpecker activity was noted here at any time during the day; the net was left up the entire time- 7 May Net still up most of day, only catch was an Ash-throated Flycatcher. Acorns still intact. No one's found it yet! 8 May Caught 2 Screech Owls during the night 1900. Finally, got a wicker- 1st year ♂, now #263. Processed and released at 1945. 9 May 1300. Net has been down all morning. Acorns look pretty well cleaned out. Net taken down. 13 May 1000. 26 birds in area, 1 sitting in storage tree, other in willows. Conceivably coming for water. 1003. Correction- there are 56 birds here, all now looking for acorns in the storage tree. One ♂ is ♂♂ up, one of the ♀
