1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Pump Hastings Reservation 10 April 1530. While walking toward here, a bird (AW) flew to the storage tree (where no stoves remained), later flew off back toward Y. 1545. Added 85 acorns. Net up. 1815. Came by (after seeing a bird here but none in the net at 1900) to find 3 birds all together in the net - virtually destroying my brand new one that I'd used! They included the adult ♀ and 2nd yr ♂ from Y (#16 and 22), who were both released before dusk, and an unbanded ♀ (#260) who was kept overnight. 11 April 1000. I had the suspicion that the above bird, #260, might be the ♀ from 1500, so I walked down there. As I stopped to check from the road, one bird flew from tree 3 toward Pump; a 2nd flew up to the upper sap side and was the ♂ (#44). So I walked back to Pump and found 2 birds there (there had been none when I'd passed a few minutes earlier); an unbanded ♂ and unbanded ♀. Do so much for that bit of speculation. In any case, I put in my remaining 25 acorns (the others were gone (!)) and the net again. 1200. Caught and banded an unringed ♂, #261, who flew off to Blomquist Knoll. At least one, probably 2 others were in the vicinity when I took him out of the net. 17 April 930. ♂259 involved at Y (indicating that he probably is a group member somewhere or another). See Y notes. ♂261 also there. ♂257 seen briefly there as well. 18 April ♂259 and ♂261 still at Y.
