Melanerpes formicivorus
Pump
(16 March) Just before dark I drilled another 100 holes here to make
up for those lost with the fallen limb and also stuck in
another set of year-plus old Blue Oak acorns (75 of them).
17 March 955. An Acorn Woodpecker was in the willow thicket area adjacent
to the Pump when I walked by. Noone was in the storage
tree, but once again, virtually instantaneously, it appeared
from the ground as if many of the acorns were already
gone.
1305. On returning, 90r/R-W*16 was in the Valley Dale just up &
along the creek from the willow; after sitting there for several
minutes she flew off toward Y (her home territory).
1440. Sitting up in the storage tree was an adult Cooper Hawk.
24 March 700. Put 30 more acorns in the tree.
28 March 1630. Put in 63 more acorns.
29 March 900. At least 2 birds were taking acorns; both flew off toward Y
(where I suspect they came) with one in their bills. Also 2
Scrub Jays trying to dislodge them (the acorns). I put the
net up.
1015. Caught a 1st year ♂ in the net - banded and released
at 1045 as #259. Origin unknown. A 2nd bird was
in the vicinity when I took him out of the net.
1400. All acorns gone when I came to move the ladder. I also
took down the net.
8 April 1400. Put in another 100 acorns in the tree here.
1815. Saw a bird in the tree as I drove by.
9 April 900. One wicker flew from here towards Y when I drove up.
Nearly all the acorns are gone already.
