1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Hastings Reservation (9 November) Purge: 3259. Last seen 13 July. Should have been seen at least by/on 3 September. :: Disappeared about 8 August ±2wks. 16 November 1045. 816 with acorn in locust. Meanwhile one of the 88 was in a V alley Oak 1/2 way toward the pond hawking and eating/harvesting acorns. Several Crows were there too-and I watched one to actually fly off and then be buzzed by the 8 woodpecker as he left the area. Apparently the above tree is another of the big producers this year, as - lots of Woodpeckers, Crows, and Magpies are vying for its resources. Florence reports seeing the AW chase several Crows and Magpies this morning when she passed, some apparently successfully (before they could grab an acorn). Two birds would usually gang up on a Crow, but one could successfully intimidate one if he tried hard enough. 1125. AW are still harvesting from the above Valley Oak (by the teleph) but no crows are coming by at the moment. 21 November 1200. 816 zooming into the locusts at the lower barn. 5 December 1100. Birds still busy storing in the locusts, harvesting their acorns from the side of School Hill. No stores in the Valley Oak yet. ①♂ DB-LP/DB #261 seen. 1120. ①♂ M/LP- [?-Maybe #322?] Yes: 8 yellow / #322. Yeah! ♀ have also. ③♀ub. All 4 Girts apparently here and doing fine. 1135. Leaving.
