Melanerpes formicivorus
Poison Oak Hill, Hastings Reservation, Carmel Valley, Monterey Co. Calif.
28 December
1400. Back up watching the formerly beleaguered territory,
where there are several birds.
1410. (1)♂LAW#330 here. A 2nd♂here also.
1418. A♀. Also (2)♂OrRW, LB-DB/L-D #325 here.
1420.(3)♂ub. By George, these birds are sapsucking-in
a Blue Oak here! This is an early record for that!
1423. M. thinks a ♂LARW (?) just got chased from the sap tree.
1426. A♀ub just got chased from the sap tree by ♂325.
1430. There is actually a fair amount of activity here.
1431. (4)♀ub sapsucking.
1435. ♂325 back sapsucking. ♂330 near top of territory. Possibly
1-2 other wing-streamered birds around.
1440. A♀ub keeps getting displaced from the sap tree by ♂325.
1442. ♂ub sapsucking.
1448. Someone who appeared to be ♂RRW d. blue bar was in the
sap tree very briefly. Either I was wrong, however, or I have
a coup (♂249?). He left very soon and then ♂325 was
back chasing off a♀again.
1505. Things have slowed down considerably. Time to explore-
1527. On my way down I saw a OrRW w/ornament, very
likely ♀342, but not even the sex was seen. This was over the next
canyon and on the way down toward the road. (See back).
