1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus 7 (18 April) ④♂22 [Y 2nd yr bird] Also perhaps a 5th bird: ⑤♂261 [other "Pump" bird] This suggests strongly that the whole rigamarole was a replacing of the unbanded adult ♂ here, #309. All 5 of these birds seem to be coexisting relatively quietly at the moment, though I'm sure the activity is not over entirely. In any case, no other activity is going on here at the moment (besides among those particular birds). There is lots of calling from Plaque area, though, where I'm going next. 1635. To Plaque. Still signs of harmony here, though lots of wakas are being given, match. 19 April 910. Still greater-than-average activity (flights + wakas) here. In locusts: ①♀16 [Y] ②♂ unrung ③♂DB/W [259 "Pump"] ④♂DB-LP/DB [261 "Pump"] 915. ♀16 in telephone pole, drummed, then barrit-cut ed several times. Within a few seconds ♂#261 landed in pole, began to mount her, but didn't make it. ⑤♂ unrung [? see below] The birds, when not greeting one another, are clearly eating acorns found from the locust trees. They are flying in turn to all parts of the territory, more or less being led by the ♀, with all the ♂'s following her. 936. Another mounting and apparent successful copulation
