1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Hastings Reservation (18 April) (the telephone pole) and the Y storage area. 1249. ♀16 [Y] landed on telephone pole above ♂ub and ♂259; woke greeted both, did not chase or supplant but went into looking for acorns in dessication crack after greeting. 1252. More greeting and less chasing seems to be going on now. 1300. Moving to different vantage point. 1300. At storage tree (3194) ♂ [School Hill] working over holes here. (3195) ♂WLW [" "] in storage tree also. ♂ running here also. Drummed briefly in storage tree. Some chasing is occurring. Lots of Garrick calling. Birds are flying up to forest edge on side of Schwell Hill. 1322. Lots of fighting and chasing have near storage tree. Net going up there. 1600. I came down to finally put up the net and discovered nobody here. Eventually I discovered several birds more or less quietly sitting in the locusts by the barn. They all flew over to the knoll, then returned several minutes later. There appeared to be 4 birds (!), 1♀ and 3♂ (‼), including ① ♀16 [Y] ② ♂ running ③ ♂259 ["Pump"]
