1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus 4 (17 April) ⑦♀195 [School Hill] Same as 194. ⑧♂ unbanded; possibly several other unringed birds. As expected, lots of calling, chasing, etc. is going on. Birds are constantly working over the trees for acorns and occasionally come up with a piece or two. Several mountings were seen, but the participants were usually unknown. Everybody seems to be chasing everyone else. ① As for the mountings, I think ♀16 was involved in at least one of them (they are brief, and posta probably do not result in copulation). 1015. Everything is still going strong. 1033. Watching telephone pole. Mainly ♀245 and School Hill juveniles here. ④♀92 [School Hill] seen. Also seen: ♂195 [School Hill juvenile] mounting ♀245 atop telephone pole; no copulation. 1215. Males continues. 1230. A peak at the telephone pole yielded ⑩♀YRW#257 ["Pump" bird; origin unknown]. 1600. More fighting. Saw ①♂261 [another "Pump" bird]. Took some pictures. It was clear that the 2 banded ♂ birds were doing more than their share of serious fighting. The numbers of birds were down to closer to 10 or so; I did see #195 and #245 again briefly, the ♂ hopped on to the ♀ again when I did. Otherwise the intruders were primarily
