1996 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Y Hastings Reservation 15 March Checked storage tree: still 0 acorns stored. One bird seen by lower barn, ♀ use / Red#16. 16 March 1343.♂ub(309) flycatching in area of the tall central telephone pole inside the Y. At least one other bird was in the vicinity. 17 March 945.♀ Or / R-w sitting in locust trees next to lower barn. ♂ Red-DB/OR # here also. Both scattered without a sound when at 950 a Red-shouldered Hawk landed in the same tree. 29 March 1055. 2 birds flew up to the '75 nest tree; 1 to a limb above the hole, the other briefly landed at the hole itself. 10 April 1800. Caught the AD♀ and the 2nd yr ♂ plus a strange ♀ at Pump. See notes there- 17 April 915. A veritable frenzy here, in particular at the locusts by the lower Barn but extending to a lesser extent to Blonquist Knoll, from the telephone pole toward School House, and the Y storage area. I estimate at least 10 and probably more birds involved, resulting in the expected frenzy of constant wakeas, along with infrequent Kaas and Carrickes. The participants included ①♀245 [Plaque] seen only at telephone pole, not in main frenzy ②♂16 [Y] in the thick of it ③♂22 [Y] " " " " ④♂259 ["Pump"] in the heart. Perhaps ♂309? ⑤♂162 [MacRoberts] Seen only up in '75 nest area on Blonquist Knoll ⑥♂194 [School Hill] Conspicuous participant, but primarily at telephone pole.
