1976 Walter D. Boening Melanerpes formicivorus 2 Hastings Reservation 18 February I finally checked today to confirm that there remain no stores here. 23 February Birds have discovered the bonanza at Pump - see Pump notes. 1 March Walked by here about 1400 scaring one bird in the tall sycamore between the telephone pole and the barn and a 2nd from the storage tree. Thinking that they had perhaps transferred some acorns from Pump, I checked the storage area, but saw no acorns. Meanwhile, a group (clearly not Y) was down at Pump. 3 March 945. A bird (8) which I figured was from this group was sitting atop the Black locust on the road side of the lower Barn. As I approached he took off, going first to the tree out in the field closer to the barn, then over to the one by Plague where those birds stage at night, then to the Plague tree itself. I didn't actually see him there, but I did hear a wake display over in their 20 tree, and when I looked 2 birds were atop Plague and at least one in the 20 tree. One of the birds in Plague then flew to the top of the next tree there, and before I could see who he was for sure flew off back in Y's direction: [illegible] 9 March 1600 - Caught the 2nd year male from here (#22) down at the net at Pump.
