1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus MacRoberts Hastings Reservation 7 December 1455. Watching 1505. 2 ♂♂ landed together on top of granary; one is ♂ M/LB #323. Other is presumably ♂ the 2nd ♂ whose existence has been questionable. This second bird is an ♂♂; he is presently working storage holes (I don't know why, since there aren't really any acorns there!) I suspect that these 2 birds moved here together (more than likely they are a ♂-♂ set from some group which has moved together here, replacing the old ♂♂. Of course, I won't be able to claim quite that for my individual records, but we'll see. 1515. Both together now drilling in the granary again. No ♀ as yet. 1520. Going to check stores: 43. They can't seriously think this is going to be enough... 16 December 1555. 5 birds flushed from the Blue Oak down in the field toward the lower Barn (on HNHR), all flew up to the woodland toward MacRoberts along the fence line. Could see no bands on any of them; one had an acorn and was chased. (see map) 1600. Watching. 1 ♂ in granary. 1620. Nobody returned after ♂ left. Nothing big going on here apparently, however. Still virtually no stores. 22 December 1600. ♂ M/LB (#323) flew into granary. What the hell are they using for food up here? 1610. Flew up and way off NW over on Blanquist's. I walked up over on Blanquist's, roughly along the fence line and came across one old granary and a young Blue Oak with an ♂ in it who
