Melanerpes formicivorus
MacRoberts
Hastings Reservation
7 December
1455. Watching
1505. 2 ♂♂ landed together on top of granary; one is
♂ M/LB #323. Other is presumably ♂ the 2nd ♂ whose
existence has been questionable. This second bird is an ♂♂;
he is presently working storage holes (I don't know why,
since there aren't really any acorns there!)
I suspect that these 2 birds moved here together (more
than likely they are a ♂-♂ set from some group which
has moved together here, replacing the old ♂♂. Of course,
I won't be able to claim quite that for my individual
records, but we'll see.
1515. Both together now drilling in the granary again.
No ♀ as yet.
1520. Going to check stores: 43. They can't seriously

16 December
1555. 5 birds flushed from the Blue Oak down in the field toward
the lower Barn (on HNHR), all flew up to the woodland toward
MacRoberts along the fence line. Could see no bands on any
of them; one had an acorn and was chased. (see map)
1600. Watching. 1 ♂ in granary.
1620. Nobody returned after ♂ left. Nothing big going on
here apparently, however. Still virtually no stores.
22 December
1600. ♂ M/LB (#323) flew into granary. What the hell are they
using for food up here?
1610. Flew up and way off NW over on Blanquist's.
I walked up over on Blanquist's, roughly along the fence line and came
across one old granary and a young Blue Oak with an ♂ in it who
