1976 Walter D. Koenig 6 Melanerpes formicivorus MacRoberts Hastings Reservation 13 June 1215. 8LRW#162 hawking in main storage tree when I arrived. Pub arrived in tree a little later. 1240. Been watching 8162 in tree toward barn hawk for some time. Finally disappeared, now going to look in the area. Found the 2 birds over on Blonquist's, where they were sitting around and apparently not near any holes that I knew of. A kearnit-cut by 8162 when he saw me drew only the unmong &; the adult & is certainly gone - Purge: (see 5 August) see 17 Feb 1977 8310. Last seen 26 May (all'3 birds seen then), gone by 4 June → Disappeared about 31 May 1976. 18 June 1640-1710. Sat and watched. About 1650 the & came to the area next to the storage tree, where she sat alert and preened the entire time to 1708. At that point she kearnit-cutted twice and flew to another perch, where she sat until I went to count stores. Stores: 709 2 July 915. 8162 sitting atop storage tree when I arrived. Watching. 920. Pub now eating acorn in storage tree. 925. & sitting. 928. Possibly chased a bird (silently) who flew way down to Blonquist Field (but it may have been her). 935. & back alone. 945. Leaving. & still here. 25 July 1915. Counted stores: 196. Heard 2 birds down in the woodland on Blonquist's. 5 August 1145. Pub eating acorn in storage tree, acting slightly frantic (but very possibly because of me). A & nearby 1202. 2 birds back together in the granary; Pub one of them.
