1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus MacRoberts Hastings Reservation (3 March) See journal for more comments. 9 March 1330. Flushed ⚫JLRW#162 and another unwingstreamered bird when I came up to move the hide. 16 March 1045. 2 birds flushed when I came to count stores: 1085 (!). Only the ones formerly stuffed into cracks in in bark seem to have been notably diminished. 8 April 8LRW(Or dot)#162 at Plague. See Plague notes. 1100. 8ub.30 in storage area; greeted another bird when flushed. 1630.#162 seen at Plague again. Displaced first by a Magpie near one's nest near the labs, then by one of the woodpeckers in the sycamore by the creek. 17 April ♂162 involved at Y. See Y notes 18 April 1000. ♂162 seen at Plague. See Plague note. 19 April 1015. ♂162 flushed from home area near storage tree. 1-2 other birds flycatching up the canyon in vicinity of '75 nest and beyond. 1022. Both unring adults (♂/♀) came to storage tree; & then flew toward Y along fence to chase an intruder in the next tree. One minute later ♂162 joined them in storage area. 1024. AW, apparently the intruder, suddenly took off from the tree near me and flew down over the road past Griffin's house and app 2/3 up the hill separating Griffin's from Davis! Acorns still remain here. 1030. These 3 seem to be it. Obviously none incubating yet (unless a 4th bird is present). The other 2 juveniles are no longer long gone. Things seem relatively normal here.
