1976 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus MacRoberts Hastings Reservation 25 January 1315. j♂O+RW#164 was in the storage tree; ♂ub and ♀ub were seen in the vicinity a few minutes later. 28 January 1030. j♂LRW#162 plus a ♀ were in the storage tree when I arrived. Checking the marked acorns, I found 44/70, of which 6 had been moved. The acorn count was 1078. 25 February Watched 1545-1620. Only an unbanded ♂ and ♀ showed up, presumably the 2 adults. Otherwise they disappeared over onto Blonquist, leaving the overall activity level low deed. 1 March 1500. 2 birds seen here again only. I was an unwing- streamered ♂. 3 March 1015. Watching from hide ♂ub over in perch tree to right of storage tree sitting 1027. ♂LRW #162 now in same tree, ♀ not seen. 1025. ♂ flew over to storage tree; sitting. 1028. ♂♂ub and ♂♀ both came to storage tree; jawaled with jw. seen. Birds getting acorn bits and eating them now. 1032. Adults gone, only ♂ remains sitting in storage tree. 1050. ♂ returned to eat some more acorn bits. ♂♂ still here. 1054. Both adults are now eating acorns in a snag in a tree the the left of the storage tree (the one just over on Hastings about 30 meters left (~SE) of storage tree along fence line. I stayed until 1200, during which time the birds returned to the storage tree twice, at 1130 and 1155. All 3 were seen several more times. Unfortunately I'd say that the prospects for either 163 or 164 look very poor.
