98 J. HAYDOCK MELANERPE S FORMICIVORUS LA2 FINHIR 22APR 13:20- Lots of acorns no birds seen. 4 MAY 10:14. Walt checked nest. Bird in hole when we arrived. Same nest hole as last year (faces down canyon, main tree with holes). Finds 5 eggs; Well incubated; ① 27.0 x 20.8 ② 26.5x 20.5 10 MAY 8:00- 4 babies; no eggs. (11.7g); one smaller (about 7g); Set ambush to catch breeding & (for powershuggle-filming). Unsuccessful- Ambush knocked down twice by birds. Breeding & never near hole; All babies very cold after not being brooded for 4½ hours. Proped one baby as I was taking it from nest. (dead) The others, I warmed up somewhat and put them back. 15 MAY 14:42. Nest failed. No babies left. 27 MAY 14:00- New nest! 5 eggs- prob incubated ~2days New hole that needs to be opened. Walt checked with peeper. 11 JUNE 14:20- Put wire blind up for capture of unbanded bird (Not sure if bird is still in group-need to do nest watch) Saw bird looking out of nest hole. So it must still behave babies. 17 JUNE 9:30- Banded 8? Helper #3034 21 JUNE 14:50- Banded 8? Helper #3038. Both 3034 and 3038 Are likely from missed full nest. 22 JUNE: 11:00, Banded 3 babies 3039-3041. Acorns remaining
